Happy New Year!

Ring Out, Wild Bells
by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more,
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out thy mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease,
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,
Ring in the Christ that is to be.

Happy New Year!!

Doodling on an Envelope

Just Scribbleprinting on a random envelope.  This one isn't for sale (I would love to do something like this on envelopes, but the blue on blue makes this a difficult design to copy...plus I smudged it.  Thought I'd try to "match the smudges" and do one on the other side but don't think that helped).

Apart from the smudges, what do you think?

Literary Junkies - March

Pink Heels Pink Truck

I like to participate in Literary Junkies, a monthly literary themed questionaire.  I'm also linking this post up at Lit Lovers.  Below are this month's questions, and my answers.

1. What are you reading right now?

The extended instructions and warnings on my meds for pneumonia...cause honestly I don't have the presence of mind for reading much else.  And facebook.

2. If you could visit any book setting, which would you choose and why?

It's a toss up between....

Rivendell, one of the settings in The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy by C.S. Lewis,  just sounds amazingly beautiful, and no fighting actually happens there during the books, so safe.  Plus, who doesn't want to meet an elf?

 OR

I'd also love to visit Phantasmorania, the setting of The Ordinary Princess, one of my favorite stories, probably one of the earliest semi-feminist fairy tales (though I don't know that for sure), and a book with most absolutely gorgeous illustrations I've ever seen...which is why I want to go there.

3. If you could sit down with any book character, who would it be and what would you ask them?

That's a toughie and I'm not sure.  I'd like to shake the mom from In This Sign by the shoulders and tell her a few things (or sign her a few things), but I don't think I'd want to ask her much.  If it's about asking I'd like to sit down with Katniss...the older Katniss with two kids, and ask about what happened AFTER the revolution, and what she hoped for her children now.  (Katniss is from the Hunger Games Trilogy, for those not familiar).

4. If you wrote a memoir and it was turned into a movie, what actor or actress would play you?

A lot of people say I look like Marlie Matlin, but she's deaf, so that might be a little tricky.  Well, lets see.  My memoir, as I've said before, would either be about growing about growing up on a boat or growing up with a mom with Manic Depresssion (Bipolar Disorder)...or probably both.  (My mom has passed, so I can talk about this now).   I can't think of who would play me as a child, but I think Jennifer Lawrence would do a good job playing me as a teen (not that I look like her...but that wouldn't be important).   She carries emotional weight well and portrays well what's going on inside...so she would be good for a story like that.  To play my mom, maybe Allison Janney.

5. What have you recently added to your to-be-read list that you are completely excited to pick up next??

I don't know if "excited" is the word, but I'm looking forward to reading How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian: Struggling with Divine Violence from Genesis Through Revelation.  Hoping for some answers.

Shamrock Temporary Tattoo Giveaway (3/10)

Hidden in the recesses of my Zazzle shop are one of my "zanier" products...temporary tattoos.   They're sold by the sheet, which has a different amount depending on design.  I bought some with my Shamrock design last year, which my kids enjoyed trying out and sharing with their friends, but  I have a few left over so I thought I'd sharesome with you.  One person will win a set of four Shamrock tattoes...one of each of the sizes shown on the sheet below.   You can enter on the Rafflecopter at the bottom of this page.

Here's a picture of the tattoo in use...

They suggest cutting it as close to the tattoo design as possible,
which I didn't do the first time I used it, and learned why.  You can see why in this pic...

You have to baby these a bit.  If you want to use them for St. Patricks Day, I suggest using them the day of.  They start to peel at the edges after a day or so.

Literary Junkies

Literary Junkies

1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it.

I'm reading Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis.  It's one of those books I've wanted to read for a long time but just never did, but right now as I go through a period of Spiritual questioning it's been good to pick up and go through it.  It deals with some of the questions I have in a very non-dismissive way.

2. Have you ever read a book that made you want to immediately travel to that destination?

Yes, but unfortunately the book, and the location it featured, was a fantasy (grin).

3. What is your ideal reading spot? (Ex. Reading nook in a library, in bed, in a hammock on the beach, etc).

Tucked under the covers in bed.

4. If you wrote a memoir, what would the title be?

I have thought many times about writing about growing up living on a boat.  It most likely would be a children's book, not a memoir, but if it was a book for adults, I think maybe I would title it "Leaning over the Water" ...or if I was going for a more humorous maybe "Watch Your Wake" or "In the Drink."

5. One of our great literary giants has recently passed, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee. Did you read the book? Thoughts/opinions. What about Go Set a Watchman?

I read To Kill a Mockingbird in 10th grade and it really did stick with me.  It was both moving and enjoyable to read, and hopefullo.  I never read Go Set a Watchman...but it's now on my "to read" list.
